What do you do when you’re a famous musician who no longer likes their name being closely aligned to Donald Trumps? You change your name of course!
It’s no secret that since Donald Trump’s shock win last Tuesday many artists have spoken out against the newly elected president.
However none of them has gone as far as to remove themselves from the President as Donnie Trump.
The Chance the Rapper collaborator was the driving force behind the 2015 album Surf (Donnie Trumpet and the social experiment) has changed his name, now preferring to go by his family name Nico Segal.
Nico says “the name started as just a joke and silly play on Trump’s name, but now it has come to embody a much more hateful meaning.” A statement a lot of Americans can probably relate to right now.
By changing his name Nico hopes to remove himself from Trump’s beliefs which are definitely not in alignment with his own. “From this point on call me Nico” he states. “I am proud to be part of a multicultural family and am grateful for the diversity of friends and family who have taught me, believed in me and encouraged me. I couldn’t stand to ever hurt them or you.”
So the recent release of Colouring Book and the Magnificent Colouring World Tour, both huge successes were a final farewell for Donnie Trumpet. From now on it’s “just call me Nico please.”
