Paramore have released another new song from their upcoming album, After Laughter, with a stylish music video to go along with it. “Told You So,” follows the release of their first single, “Hard Times,” which was released in April.
After Laughter is set to be released on May 12th, and is their first new album since their self-titled LP in 2013. It’s also the first Paramore album since the return of founding drummer Zac Farro, who left the band in 2010. Farro wrote and co-directed the video for, “Told You So,” with Aaron Joseph. In an interview with The FADER, lead singer Hayley WIlliams explained that the music video is based around the band’s car rides after their studio sessions in L.A.
“Zac noticed that my anxiety and overall state was just a lot more peaceful on those drives,” Hayley explained. It means a lot that they conceptualized a video around a passing moment we had as friends.” She added that there is a, “sense of unity” in the scenes in the car, where they are all dancing to the music together wearing red.
Both songs from their upcoming album mark a major departure from their signature punk-rock sound. The band seems to be experimenting with funkier sounds and pop sensibilities, which we saw a glimpse of in their most recent album. Their sound is more dance than it has ever been, and moves further away from the emotional, angsty feel of their earlier tunes like, “Misery Business,” “That’s What You Get,” and “Ignorance.”
Speaking to the Times, Paramore’s guitarist Taylor York acknowledged the band’s shift in musical style.
“We’ve gotten to a point with our new music where we don’t really want to head bang anymore. We can do whatever we want and then when Hayley gets on it, that’s what makes it Paramore,” he explained.
The band’s new music has received a mixture of criticism and praise from hard core fans. While some fans have expressed their admiration of Paramore’s bold shift in sound, others have accused the band of “selling out” to the pop world.
